WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY?

Works proactively with the Head of HR - Cement, The Detroit Plant and, the US Logistics team in the development of business strategies that align the work force with plant & Terminals performance goals and needs. Works collaboratively with both management and staff to implement site and corporate policies, programs and initiatives that are both strategic and operational in their scope. These activities may include employment, compensation, labor relations, benefits, training, safety program, communications and community relations and employee services and may be performed personally or through subordinates.

WHAT WILL YOU DO? 

  • Coaches and supports managers and supervisors on all processes of the Performance Management Program to ensure that they are understood and being used.
  • Coaches and advises managers and supervisors on leadership practices and teaming.
  • Interprets the collective agreement, trains managers & supervisors to understand its meaning and the implications of decisions and actions in dealing with the unionized labor force. Represents organization at personnel-related hearings and investigations. Represents management in negotiating collective bargaining agreements.
  • Ensures the plant's human resources support is achieving the strategic plan by proactively assisting management.
  • Provides Management training on the processes of interviewing, hiring and termination. Manages and leads the processes of selection and recruitment at the plant. Ensures all new employees receive orientation to foster positive attitude toward company goals.
  • Conducts needs analysis and confers with managers and supervisors to determine training needs. Coordinates training as identified and evaluates programs.
  • Coordinates all plant training on legislated issues including harassment, labor standards and human rights. Responds to inquiries regarding policies, procedures and programs
  • Ensures all new employees receive orientation to foster positive attitude toward company goals.
  • Provides sound management and direction in the areas of the people aspects of change and in promoting a culture that values operational excellence.
  • Prepares and administers budget for human resources operations at the Detroit plant & US Terminals.
  • Identifies legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting human resources functions and ensures policies, procedures, and reporting are in compliance.
  • Maintains employee records as required by law, local governing bodies or departments in the organization.
  • Develops and maintains a human resources system, analyses data and issues reports to satisfy the information requirements at the operational and corporate levels.
  • Liaises with Corporate Human Resources in the administration of payroll, benefits programs, pension plans, and all HR policies and procedures.
  • Develops and maintains productive relationships with external contacts and with management and staff within the organization.
  • In conjunction with Plant and Terminal Operations Management, may act as the plant liaison with the surrounding community.                          

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED?

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) or equivalent; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • SPHR or PHR (Preferred)
  • Experience working in a unionized environment is must.
  • Experience in heavy industry is highly recommended.
  • Strong capability in both negotiation and facilitation skills are required.
  • This position has to develop and work within the community with various organizations and government agencies.
  • Fluent English;
  • Other languages such as Portuguese, Spanish or Tagalog would be a significant advantage.

Salary Range: $99,201.92 - $124,002.40
