Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Recent graduate within two (2) years of graduation with appropriate background.
  • Bachelor's degree (BSc or BEng) from four-year college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Equivalent experience can include a combination of an accredited non-university/ technical school level safety program and direct safety supervision in an industrial environment.

 

SUMMARY/JOB SCOPE:

To serve as the graduate level advisor in the areas of occupational health and safety by developing and carrying out procedures with the line organization that effectively control accident and health exposures in the company. Responsible for providing guidance, awareness and proactive leadership and solutions to ensure safe and reliable operations while acting as the driver of change, advocate and consultant for occupational health and safety matters for Staff and contractors of VCNA.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Safety Administration, including:
  • Collect injury /accident info and record data continuously/monthly for Safety Pyramid and Summary across North America
  • Proficient in Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) rules and regulations
  • Assist with worker compensation claims reporting and follow up (CAN)
  • Administration of health and safety management system, such as data input and management, monthly reporting
  • Work collaboratively with key stakeholders to organize and administer safety trainings, medical exams,
  • Research of best safety practices, tools, software, and proactive identification of opportunities for improvement.
  • Support of corrective action management for regulator inspections, internal and external audits.
  • Support in the collection and development of safety documentation for audit
  • Safety database administration (eCompliance, documentation in e-Docs, MSDS database)
  • Participate and support in site/plant health and safety meetings
  • JHSC punch list close out. Sit on the Plant Joint Health and Safety Committee. Facilitates and administers the process.
  • Assist in VCNA policy and program development, including: monthly safety package, alerts, posters and other safety material
  • Field inspections support.
  • Invoicing and procurement activities support.
  • Drug and alcohol testing program support (US).
  • Support the health and safety improvement plan.
  • Supports internal customers by serving as subject matter expert in assigned areas by interpreting regulations, providing information to address a customer need and provide guidance in the development of programs, and policy. 
  • Assisting in development and maintenance of safety procedures and programs necessary to improve the safety program’s effectiveness. Monitors adherence to safety program policies and procedures in the plant and prepare discrepancy reports for plant management.
  • Provides leadership in ISO, responsible for maintaining the safety ISO certification, as applicable.
  • Providing support to the employees in reporting corrective actions, locating necessary documentation and forms, receiving suggestions of opportunities for improvement and actioning them appropriately. 

 

AUTHORITY/DECISION MAKING: Limited expectation of independent decision-making Beyond day-to-day operational tasks. Work under the supervision of a H&S Specialist.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No supervisory responsibilities.

  • Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability for technical writing (i.e. drafting a policy, standard or procedure). Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, with various levels of personnel. As VCNA is an international organization, ability to communicate in languages other than English is desirable but not required.

 

  • Mathematical Skills: Basic math skills expected.

 

  • Computer Skills: Knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Access, Word). Knowledge of Excel and PowerBI. Ability to quickly learn new software. Ability to use pivot tables and create dashboards on MS Excel

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Travel Requirement: Ability to travel to different sites/ plants with your own car and a clean driving license is a requirement.

Physical Demands:

Moderate amount physical activity, e.g., prolonged walking, sitting, standing, walking up and down ladders and tall structures, sustained keyboarding for up to 50% of the workday, ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds/ 10 kg.
