WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY?

To assist in the development of strategies, programs and procedures for North America that improves the overall safety program and culture for VCNA. The incumbent supports the Corporate Manager providing, guidance, and expertise to business units with respect to the development and implementation and change management of health & safety strategies, standards, policies & related processes, legislative requirements, and in the use of the Health & Safety Management System. The role works closely with business leadership teams in Canada to identify and implement programs that meet the safety needs/reduction of safety risks at the business level.

 

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

 

  • Develops, implements and maintains safety policies and programs necessary to improve the safety program's effectiveness through motivating people. Supports process changes, change management in the safety cycle across Canadian sites.

 

  • Act as a subject matter expert for H&S input during change management including projects to ensure implementation of H&S best practices and VCNA policies.

 

  • Supports the effective development, delivery and implementation of health & safety programs such as VCNA Safety Standards, Avetta, Critical Risk Control, eCompliance, Industrial Hygiene and communications that support the maintenance and of the Health and Safety Management System.

 

  • Responsible to support the development, implementation, and direction of the VCNA Safety Programs, procedures and initiates evolution. Supports and delivers safety training to employees, supervisors, and plant management to support developed programs. Determine through needs-analysis the requirements and priorities for safe work processes in maintenance and operational functions with a focus on high-risk tasks.

 

  • Work closely with the GM's and employees and OHS Director to ensure implementation and continuous improvement of safety, health and loss control processes and systems within North America.

 

  • Assist units in preparation for periodic health & safety audits, monitor status of actions to address audit recommendations to ensure actions are completed on time, and aid identify and remove barriers to completion.

 

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED? 

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university and 2-5 years related experience and/or training with experience with MOL, Safety Management Systems, Contractor Management and Industrial Hygiene preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent organizational and planning skills, with the ability to attend to detail, ensuring accuracy and timeliness; Strong leadership skills, with an ability to remain calm under pressure and manage multiple activities concurrently. Experience with developing and implementing safety programs and change management is key. Construction, mining and transportation background is ideal.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to focus on details and understand the overall impact of events and decisions.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to communicate with senior management of VCNA as well as customers, consultants/contractors and employees. The employee will regularly need to travel across sites in Canada.
