WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY?
The Environmental Manager is responsible for assuring compliance with environmental legal requirements at federal, provincial and municipal level. Obtains required permits and approvals, prepares environmental reports, coordinates monitoring and testing of wastewater discharges, air emissions and waste streams. Primary contact of environmental agencies such as Ministry of the Environment, Environment Canada, Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Ministry of Natural Resources. Negotiates conditions and environmental requirements with government agencies associated with environmental license and permits. Liaison with the community on environmental matters. Responsible for budgeting and tracking environmental costs. Participates in projects and studies to improve environmental performance. Responsible for implementing and maintaining ISO 14001 certification. Promotes environmental awareness and implements training programs to ensure compliance with environmental requirements.
WHAT WILL YOU DO?
- Developing and implementing environmental strategies and action plans to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and corporate requirements
- Organizing and leading the environmental team at the plant
- Managing activities needed to maintain and implement environmental policies and procedures and participate in plant-wide H&S efforts
- Obtaining certificates of approval, permits to take water or general permits from government agencies
- Planning, programming and budgeting available funds for environmental activities
- Incorporating sustainability and environmental management practices into daily operations and decision making at the plant
- Advising the Plant Manager and Director of Environment Cement VCNA about significant sustainability and environmental aspects and impacts relative to the plant’s activities
- Acting as a liaison with the community on environmental concerns; coordinating public hearings and consultations on environmental matters
- Monitoring environmental compliance and implementing environmental programs to ensure the continuity of the business and controlling the risk of fines, prosecution and environmental penalties
- Negotiating and managing environmental matters with government agencies
- Implementing environmental projects to ensure legal compliance and improve environmental performance
- Emphasizing sustainable practices and environmental stewardship throughout the plant’s operations on a routine basis
- Promoting and raising awareness at all levels of the organization of the impact of emerging environmental issues, on legal, corporate, ethical and social responsibility
- Training staff at all levels of the organization in environmental issues and responsibilities
- Ensuring that all required reporting is conducted on time and that suitable backup measures are covered in defined policies and procedures, this includes but is not limited to all requirements for air, water, solid/liquid waste, and/or any specific local requirements or consent decrees
- Ensuring implementation, maintenance and certification of Environmental Management System ISO 14001
- Auditing, analyzing and reporting environmental performance to internal and external clients and regulatory bodies
- Maintain all records associated with environmental activities at the plant
- Be committed to reducing the consumption of energy to the maximum extent without affecting productivity while providing the following benefits: increase the profitability of the company, conservation of energy, and minimizing the emission of greenhouse gases.
- Is a member of the Energy Management Conservation Committee (E=MC2) which is responsible to develop and structure a program to achieve Excellency in reduction of reduction of energy usage, such as fossil fuels and electric energy, and reduce the amount of Can$/unit of energy.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED?
University Degree in Engineering, Science or Environmental with five years of related experience and three years of experience as environmental manager in a large manufacturing industry.
Work Environment:
Combination of office environment with field activities. Could be exposed to dusty and noisy environment when doing field activities.

Salary Range: $101,000 - $126,000
Location: St.Marys Cement, Bowmanville Plant
